Talk Facilitated by Professor Emily Greenwood
Abstract: The Odyssey has been used as a metaphor for many different, interlocking American histories, including histories of colony and conquest, the removal of Native Americans, the narratives of fugitive slaves, migrations from North to South and East to West, the experiences of immigrants and refugees, and the homecoming (and estrangement at home) of military veterans. Poets, novelists, visual artists, playwrights, and filmmakers continue to explore the American resonances of the Odyssey. This talk will use the theme of “crying for home” as a theme for exploring Odysseus and Penelope in our contemporary cultural imagination.
